The House Music In Schools Program is a new initiative to introduce school-age children, young teens, and college students to the fun, uplifting, and positive music and dance culture called House. We are seeking a group of volunteers--teens, adults, parents, and anyone who believes young lives can be impacted through music and through dancing. Members of the Volunteer Force will be tasked with the following. Level of participation and time commitment will be left up to each individual:
Social change happens when ordinary individuals with ordinary passions set out to achieve extraordinary things. (Click the image to view a larger version) House Music, which originated in Chicago during the late 70s/early 80s and later expanded to other large North American and European cities, is the spiritual descendant of Disco. Incorporating a characteristic 4/4 drum beat, distinctive basslines, and often "live-sounding" percussion, House Music has since expanded into over 13 different subgenres, from Latin House, Soulful House, Funky House, and Deep House to Progressive House, Tech House, and Tribal House. This diversity of sound and feel has given House Music a home in many places, from the world's largest nightclubs to parks and ice skating rinks in cities across the globe.
Danny Dance, a Salt Lake City DJ, Producer, and House Dancer, wants to bring House Music into the schools. The House Music In Schools Program fuses Danny's love of education (he's a former New York City and Salt Lake City Science Teacher) with his passion for sharing House Music and House Dancing--a popular form of upright, freeform dance performed to the music.
The program is available to middle/junior high schools, high schools, and colleges/universities. From hands-on student workshops on House Dancing to in-depth guest lectures on House Music, the program gives students a direct, interactive window to House culture. Schools may also request House Dance classes as part of in-school or afterschool programs. Workshops on the mechanics and aesthetics of House Music DJing will also be offered.
