This One and Only Chance to Live and Dance

Mixdown console with the word MASTER prominent

The first day of a new year is as great a time as any to take a good look in the mirror, peer through the eyes of your inner destiny, and take stock of your dreams.  As productive as 2011 was for me personally, professionally, and musically, I feel that one of the biggest lessons of last year was how important it is to bridge your actions to your ambitions.  As the song goes, “heaven is only one step away,” and however you define your own heaven during your time here on Earth (a time I call ‘This One and Only Chance to Live and Dance‘), taking that one first step is critical.

For me, personal paradise consists of achieving an iteration of myself that I know exists in there somewhere, one that answers, “What am I capable of when I push myself to my personal and creative limits?”  It’s an important question, and if I was placed here at the caprice of a random universe, as the cosmically improbable consequence of atoms coming together just so at precisely the right time in the right place, then I want my life to be an opportunity to make up my own right reason for being here.  I intend to spend 2012 laying the groundwork for just that.

But what does it take to do that?  How can we structure our days this year to create an atmosphere that builds on all we’ve learned and turns those lessons into successes?  How can I use my passion for House Music to fuel my financial self-sufficiency and create a sense of real accomplishment?  Can the inherent limitations of time—after all, everything takes time: businesses take time to build, plans take time to unravel, and even patience takes time to yield its virtue—be reduced so that I reach my goals sooner?  I don’t have the answers to these questions yet, but on my quest to become a world-class sample-based House Music producer and build a successful music business through my new Dance Is A Feeling LLC, I’ve come to understand that there are key factors I can’t compromise if I’m going to ‘get there’:

  1. The goals to guide my path
  2. The habits to guide my goals
  3. The discipline to guide my habits
  4. The health to guide my discipline
  5. The choices to guide my health

Without goals, we are little more than leaves in the protean wind of time, plotting an inconsistent path rather than a reliable arc towards our destinations.  I need to make goals that fully support where I’m trying to go; these goals can be simple and even general, but their effects are deeply felt when seen through.  Something as basic as “improve as a music producer“ guides my path towards an end that I can work my way to, and setting these kinds of goals is the first of the important pieces of a plan.

The second piece is equally crucial: when people make resolutions or set goals but do not reach them, it’s often as a result of not making solid habits.  A habit must be written down and tracked regularly; it has to relate directly to your goals in a direct and persistent way.  Examples of habits that guide my goal of becoming a better producer are to read an hour of books like ‘The Producer’s Manual‘ each day and to create two new songs daily.  These actions—habits—feed the goal in an iterative way.

Thirdly, and necessarily, I need to develop the discipline to stick with my habits through thick and thin, every single day of the year; the destabilizing pillars of normal life, be they sleepless party nights, day job-induced tiredness, and emotional hangovers of romance, can’t become fodder for slacking on the habits that support my goals.  This is probably the easiest link to break in the chain, but also the one of most consequence.  As a friend mentioned earlier on my Facebook wall, “No one is on all the time”, which is true—but we have to try.

If you’re wondering what it takes to stay sane when adhering so strongly to your vision, the answer lies in your health.  If you are sound of mind, sound of body, and sound of spirit, you’ll be more likely to be sound of—in my case, one of the things I strive for—sound of music.  I recently challenged myself to a 99-day fitness duel made up of four simple things I can work on: walk daily, do push-ups and sit-ups on alternating days, and stretch regularly.  Though I’ve dealt with debilitating lower back pain for years, lateral lumbar scoliosis be damned, I’m committed to managing the pain and mitigating its impact on me this year.  And health need not be just physical—the more things you do that make you happy, from spending time with friends & family and allowing romance into your life to watching the latest Louis C.K. comedy special and dancing outdoors like nobody caresthe healthier you’ll be in support of your discipline.

Finally, I can’t control the universe or even all the things in my little slice of it, but I can control the choices that I make, and these choices impact everything from my health on up.  Things like choosing to let the right people in and the wrong people go; choosing how I spend my time or who gets to spend it with me; choosing to tackle my daily habits before turning on Words With Friends (I’m a hopeless addict); and choosing experiences that ultimately support my goals rather than slow me down will help me stay beholden to my health and answerable to my vision.

So plans are wide amalgams of goals, habits, discipline, health, and the choices you make; if you have the foresight to envision what you want, and the courage to bridge your actions to your ambitions, steadfastly moving towards your goals, you will someday answer all your inner questions, you’ll move a step closer to your heaven, and you’ll make the very best of This One and Only Chance to Live and Dance.

DANCE TIP: Spin in Your Bathroom

Danny Dance in what appears to be mid-flight, with the words "Don't Give Up" on his t-shirtPeople sometimes ask me on my videos, “Hey, Danny, how come your movements are so smooth?”, or tell me in the club, “How can you dance like that without hitting anybody?” Usually, the answer is “lots of practice”, but that’s not exactly true (I don’t practice very much) and “practice” isn’t really a helpful answer to someone that wants to improve their House Dance.

So I’m firing up a new mini-series of mini-tips aimed at helping you, too, dance more to your liking. Everybody can dance–some people just do it more or more often than others.  This stuff is particularly aimed at House Dancing but I imagine it will be helpful for other styles of street dance or just dance (movement) in general. I’m no professional, so take it all with a grain of salt, and remember to have fun, which is really the only reason to dance.

DANCE TIP: Every time you use your bathroom, try to spin around on one foot (1X or 2X).  You’ll get used to spinning in tight spaces, which will help you dance better in a packed club setting.

I mentioned that I don’t practice often: I rarely set aside specific time to do that; instead, I weave dancing into common situations like standing in line, waiting for a movie to start, or just plain using the restroom.  Think about it: the average person uses the bathroom six times a day.  That’s 6 opportunities to spin per day, or 42 per week, or 168 per month—you get the idea.  Eventually, your body will just get used to spinning on a foot 180 degrees, then 360 degrees, then 720 degrees, and so on.  In a tight space.   Aside from the obvious benefits of learning to control your rotation and getting used to progressively longer spins (you’ll be doing triples within months even if you’ve never thought of yourself as having that kind of coordination), you’ll also get used to not hitting the bathroom sink when you spin around—and if you don’t hit the bathroom sink, you probably won’t hit someone in the club when you’re dancing at a cramped party.  Triple win!

CHALLENGE: This week, commit to doing at least one spin every time you use your own bathroom (I don’t advise you do it in a public restroom because people might start spinning with you and a flash mob in the bathroom could get messy).  At first, you might need to hold on to something when starting or stopping your spin.  Use socks for extra fun.  Keep track of how many times it takes before you can start and stop your spin without touching anything :)

Happy dancing!

Dance Everywhere: Record Yourself Dancing To the Sunset

image of Danny Dance silhouetted against a Miami sunset

A few weeks ago, I posted a video of me dancing in line at a Chipotle in Miami, and the video ended with the phrase, “Dance Everywhere” as a nod to the idea that we should dance in public places more often and show people what (in my case) House Music and House Dancing are all about.  I followed that video up with this past Friday’s House Dance with Danny Dance EP 9 (Sudden Urge to Dance), in which I jumped out of my car upon seeing a Miami sunset and recorded a short dance clip as that sunset silhouetted me, ending with the words “Dance Everywhere” again:

Well, last night, as I dozed off to sleep, I came across this cool short dance clip by elektratek, dancing to a gorgeous purple sunset in the Arizona dessert.  Her video also ended with the words, “Dance Everywhere“—

So if you have an iPhone, or a $70 Flip Ultra HD like me, put that baby down on the floor one of these evenings and record yourself dancing to your own city’s sunset.  Add the words, “Dance Everywhere” to the end of the video and post it up!  Let’s show the world that we can, and should, dance everywhere! =)

Life & Times of Danny Dance #1: Oasis Indeed

Night time on South Beach, Miami, near the Ocean Drive district

All 26 bones, 33 joints, and 20 muscles in my feet hurt. Not from running barefoot after reading this year’s Harvard research on the topic of barefoot running, but rather from dancing up a storm last night at the appropriately-titled, biweekly (can we please make it weekly?) Oasis Party at Purdy Lounge, South Beach.

I first heard about this party from Julius the Mad Thinker (who’ll incidentally be in town this Saturday night at the Vagabond playing with none other than Boddhi Satva, one of the highest Traxsource-topping and deepest producers in the game). Julius put me in touch with Jeannie of Saraswati Miami, the party’s head promoter, who then introduced me to House Dancer & DJ Shade, one of the party’s resident DJs as well as young dynamo of the South Florida House scene. Yea, House Music is all about family; one of my favorite things about it.

Promo/Interview Reel – OASIS with special guests DJ VIDAL n DJ FOX

Anyhow, I show up last night, all tired from a day’s worth of work, thinking I’ll get to just chill and vibe to the music. Yea, right. Like Charlie Murphy would say…”Wrong. Wrong.”

First of all, the girl-on-girl House Dancing…delicious. I mean, can you imagine two girls that are absolutely killer dancers in their own right, going at each other like tigers to the drum beat? I’d never seen anything like it; let’s just say the next time I’m asked, “if you were stuck on an island, and could only take three things…”, I’ll cut them off and shout, “two House Dancing girls and a DJ booth”. No lie.

I danced pretty much the entire night, to the point where I literally could not dance anymore (might have to hit the gym just to keep up with Jeannie & Ev, who have dance batteries for days). I was also struck by the strong sense of community at the party: the well-traveled DJ Peace showed up; the Clevelander‘s Soulcentricity Sundays DJ Wasabi swung through; Shade and his friends invited all of their (can I say, great-looking) friends; and everybody had a good time. Cameras flashing, House Music booming, drink spills kept to a minimum, room enough to dance…man, I had a blast! DJ Vidal and DJ Foxx kept a steady stream of Latin House, Minimal House, Soulful House, and Deep House pumping the entire time.

Can’t wait to see this Oasis party continue to grow to a weekly, neck-snapping dance party with even more people, dancing, and community in the days ahead! Pics from last night coming soon!

And if you’re in the mood for some freestyle dancing tonight, check out Shade’s dancestravaganza ‘Style Freeing Fridays‘ at Kelly’s School of Dance in Weston.
