Armand Van Helden is definitely one of the cool kids. He’s right up there with like, I don’t know, Ali G, Kanye, Pharrell, and Jon Stewart. This guy has been making the bangers–and when I say bangers, I mean BANGERS–since the 90s, first with monster tracks like U Don’t Know Me, Professional Widow, Funk Phenomena, and others; then in the early 21st century with fire tracks like My, My My; and, and more recently, with crossover, indie- and House-favorite hits like aNYway (this time under the alias Duck Sauce, alongside production partner A-Trak).
This cat has staying power and cool factor like no other in the House Music industry: from repeatedly topping UK pop charts to DJing in the world’s biggest clubs and festivals, I wouldn’t be surprised if he remains relevant for decades to come. Part of that has to do with his sound: it’s commercially satisfying without being commercial. His ability to tap into the Indie/Scenester/Hipster audience–from University of Utah college kids keen on thrifty minimalism (I got my favorite blazer at the D.I., woot!) to Boys Noize-listening, Walking On A Dream-humming urbanites and suburbanites throughout the U.S., Armand’s got the gift of crossover influence.
